TURA: West Garo Hills police have suspended one of its personnel and initiated departmental proceedings against another constable over Friday night’s incident in which some police personnel allegedly vandalised the office of an NGO – Association for Democracy and Empowerment and assaulted one of its member at Araimile locality of Tura town.
“The action has been taken against the two constables after an initial inquiry,” said district police Chief Mukesh Kr Singh.
Narrating the sequence of events, Singh said that the police team was returning from Garobadha after performing a duty when the incident took place.
He said that the police personnel spotted some NGO members engaged in questioning a truck driver whose vehicle was parked on the road near the ADE office.
“Suspecting something was not right the policemen approached the truck. Seeing the approaching policemen, four persons fled from the scene and one entered the ADE office,” claimed the Tura SP adding that two of his men followed the NGO member after which the incident took place.
“Whatever may be the case we have taken prompt action against the erring personnel,” said the police chief.
However, the ADE organization has rubbished the police version and maintained that the attack was deliberate against them for taking up the alleged fake encounter case of Oragitok in which police shot dead a Nokma’s son. The organisation and its allies are demanding arrest of the guilty police personnel.
Meanwhile, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi has appealed to the NGO to withdraw the proposed bandh on the grounds that Tuesday is the closing of the annual financial year in which various bills and other transactions are required to be cleared for various departments and personnel.
