SHILLONG: Former Laitkroh MDC Carmel Sohtun died at his residence at Pomlakrai on Monday afternoon after prolonged illness. He was 41.
Sohtun is survived by his wife and four children.
Family sources informed that Sohtun had been diagnosed with a motor neuron disease about three months back and was undergoing treatment at Dispur Hospital in Assam.
He was discharged from the hospital last week.
Sohtun was elected as the MDC from Laitkroh on a UDP ticket in the 2009 KHADC election.
He then left the UDP and served as an Independent MDC before joining KHNAM just before the end of the term. His name had featured in the KHNAM list of candidates for the 2014 election, but did not contest the election since his constituency (Laitkroh) had been deleted following the delimitation of constituencies and had been attached with Mylliem, Langkyrdem and Sohra.
He will be laid to rest on April 8 at the Mawbynna Presbyterian Church Cemetery, of which he was the Church elder.
