National rifle shooter, 4 others held for killing blue bull
Bulandshahr (UP): A national rifle shooter and four others were arrested for allegedly killing a blue bull in Halpura village under Shikarpur police station area here, police said on Saturday. National shooter Najam, 35, Mubin, 38, Arman, 28, Muzaffar, 45, and Iqbal, 32, were arrested on Friday night and the carcass of the antelope and her live calf were seized from their vehicle, SP (Rural) Ashok Kumar said. The firearm used for killing the bull was also recovered, he said. A case was registered against the five accused under Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 and they have been sent to jail, the SP said. Najam is younger brother of ace shooter Mehraj who represented India in London Olympics 2012, Common Wealth games 2011 held in New Delhi and 2014 Asian Games, he said. The brother duo was booked by police in February 2012 here for allegedly killing a Sambar deer, he said. However, Allahabad High Court had stayed their arrest in the case, he said. (PTI)
BSF camp attack: Maoist couple nabbed
Raipur: A Naxal couple, allegedly involved in the gun-battle at Chhote Baithiya BSF post in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district earlier this week, were arrested on Saturday. Dasru Pungati alias Vikram (35) and his wife Nirmala (38) were apprehended from Burgi Pipili village in the neighbouring Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, station house officer of Bande police station Naresh Deshmukh told sources. The two were active in Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border area for the past several years and were presently handling the Naxal activities in Bande area of Chhattisgarh, he added. A jawan was killed when a group of ultras opened indiscriminate fire in an attack on BSF camp in Bande area on the night of April 12. Preliminary investigation revealed the involvement of Dasru and his wife in the attack, and their whereabouts were traced to Kasansur, following which a team of BSF and local police was dispatched there. The two were arrested with the help of Kasansur police and were brought to Bande today, Deshmukh said. (PTI)
Good Samaritans to be rewarded, honoured: Khattar
Panchkula (Haryana): Haryana government is working to create a system under which people engaged in lending a helping hand to those in need would be honoured and rewarded, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Saturday. Addressing the gathering at the Panchkula Marathon 2015 organised by the Haryana Police here, Khattar said that good Samaritans would be honoured as well as rewarded. The Chief Minister, who also participated in the marathon, described the youth as the future of the nation. “The country has high hopes from the young generation and they have to play a bigger role in nation-building,” he said. “India has lot of resources as well as robust youth power. If we link youth power with the nation’s resources, India has the potential to play the role of Vishwa Guru (universal leader),” he added. “In this era of technology, we can take the nation far ahead with maximum use of Information Technology,” he said. Khattar said that his government has started a number of IT-enabled services like ‘CM Window’ for grievance redressal and ‘Harsamay’ portal of police. “The government is going to roll-out 22 e-services, including e-Stamping, from May 2, 2015 to ensure prompt delivery of citizen-centric services,” he said. Five killed as van rams into tree in Chhattisgarh
Korba: Five persons were killed when their pick-up van rammed into a tree at a village in Jashpur district on Saturday, police said. The mishap occurred in the wee hours today near Peta village of the district when the victims were proceeding towards Jashpur from Ambikapur, Bagicha police station house officer (SHO) G D Sonwani said. As per the preliminary investigation, when the vehicle reached near Peta village, the driver lost control over steering and dashed into a tree alongside the road, killing five persons on the spot and critically injuring one, he said. Soon after the incident, a police team rushed to the spot along with medical aid. The deceased were identified as Rajan (42), Suman Gupta (35), Arjun Gupta (28), Manbahal (34) and driver Borgan Mansuri (25). A case has been registered in this regard and further investigation is underway, the SHO added. (PTI)
Gold worth Rs 1.55 cr seized from passenger
Tiruchirappalli (TN): Customs officials have seized seven kgs of gold from a passenger who arrived here from Singapore, airport sources said on Saturday. The passenger, identified as M Nawazkhan, was arrested last night after gold worth about Rs 1.55 crore was found in his possession, they said. (PTI)
Boy killed in leopard attack
Nashik: A three-and-half-year old boy was killed in a leopard attack in Pote vasti near Bhuse village of Nifad taluka of the district. Around 1930 hrs on Friday, when the victim, Ganesh Madan Pote was playing in his courtyard, a leopard, who was hiding near the house, suddenly pounced on him and dragged him away to a sugar cane field and killed him, police said.Later, villagers recovered his body from the field. 6 suspected Maoists arrested on extortion charges in Bihar
Muzaffarpur: Six suspected Maoists were on Saturday arrested from Sheohar, Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi districts of Bihar on the charges of alleged extortion. The operation was conducted by police teams from, after receiving complaints that some people had demanded ‘levy’ or extortion money from brick kiln owners. Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar Mishra said, “Our men nabbed three persons from Sheohar district, two from Muzaffarpur and one from Sitamarhi. All of them are connected with each other and we have verified it with their mobile call details.” The SSP said these persons had demanded ‘levy’ from brick kilns under Hathauri police station area in Muzaffarpur district and threatened their owners of dire consequences if the demands were not met. ” We acted on the complaint from the kilns,” Mishra said. The SSP said the six were being interrogated. (PTI)
