Tension runs high in WJH village

Attack by neighbouring hamlet

JOWAI: A mob of around 300 people from Borato village in West Jaintia Hills armed with deadly weapons including SBBL guns and lethal weapons allegedly attacked Maitdein village on Monday.
Following reports of the incident, a police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police, Chemphang Syrti along with a Magistrate rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
“They came in 25 vehicles including trucks and destroyed our village,” headman of Maitdein village, Darphi Sariang informed.
“They cut down our pine trees, destroyed around 300 orange plants, a fishery and stole our chicken and pigs,” the Rangbah Shnong further alleged.
The Rangbah Shnong informed that few days ago, the people of Borato village had threatened to attack Maitdein village.
On Saturday last, the headman along with some of the village elders from Maitdein lodged a complaint regarding the matter with WJH Police.
“Our village consists of over 360 households and the people are now living in fear of another attack,” the Rangbah Shnong said.
It has been learnt that the village elders from Maitdein will meet the WJH Deputy Commissioner in this regard on Tuesday.
