Shillong girl to represent India in US Open TT meet

SHILLONG: Shillong girl Tanushree Das Gupta have been selected to represent India in the US Open table tennis championship which will be held Nevada, Las Vegas from July 7 to 11.
She is the first table tennis player from the State to take part in a major international event.
Tanushree, a Class X student of All Saints Diocesan High School is the currently ranked 25 in the country at junior level.
The ranking of Tanushree could have been higher   as the national tournaments clashed with her examinations and she was unable to participate in some of the events.
She has been representing Meghalaya at the national tournaments since 2008.
“It is great honour to be getting an opportunity to represent the country. One day, I will be definitely would like to achieve like Saina Nehwal and Saina Mirza in order to make my country proud,” Tanushree said while taking to media on Wednesday.
She said that she knows that this is only the beginning.
“I know that I have to work harder in order to achieve my dreams,” the young table tennis player from the State said.
Meghalaya Table Tennis Association president RG Lyngdoh said that it a great to see that the State has finally achieved to produce a player who has the potential to make it big at the international level.
‘It is sincere dedication and hard work of Tanushree which has made this possible. I will only like to congratulate her for this huge achievement,” he said.
Lyngdoh also hopes that this achievement of Tanushree will inspire many more youths to follow her footsteps. “I always feel that we need to produce a sports icon in the State,” he said.
Tanushree coach Lamphrang L Nonglait said that he is happy for her selection in the championship.
‘I have been associated with her for the last ten years. I always knew that she will make it big one day,” Nonglait said.
