Agartala: The Centre has initiated a process of setting up readymade garments’ manufacturing centres in all the north eastern states to generate employment, Union Textiles Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said today. “The union textile ministry has initiated a process for setting up readymade garment manufacturing units in all the eight NE states to provide employment, mainly to women, and develop skill,” Gangwar said after laying foundations for an apperal and garment manufacturing unit and a silk printing unit jointly with the Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar here.
He said the neighbouring Bangladesh fulfilled eight per cent of the total requirement of readymade garments in the world when it was slightly more than three per cent for India. “We can do much better, so we have decided to set up eight centres in the region,” he said. He said the ministry had allocated Rs 18 crore for setting up of the garment manufacturing industry in the state. (PTI)
