Bandh perpetrators to be treated as HNLC cadres, warns police

SHILLONG: Taking a hard stand against HNLC-sponsored bandh and road blockade, police on Tuesday said that any ‘accused’ arrested in connection with the agitation will be treated as HNLC cadres.
HNLC called the bandh from 6 pm of May 26 to 6 pm of May 27 followed by road blockade from May 27 to June 2 (from 8 pm to 6 am) in protest against the delay on the part of government in giving nod to the Village Administration Bill
The East Khasi Hills district police chief M Kharkrang said that police will take up cases under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against anyone found indulging in criminal acts during the bandh and road blockade of HNLC. “The accused will be treated as HNLC cadres”, SP said.
The bandh called by HNLC which began on Tuesday at 6 pm has affected night life as there was rush of persons and vehicles to their respective destinations. There was also a rush of people to market places during the evening hours.
Earlier, staff of some state government offices outside the periphery of Secretariat left home early.
The Chief Secretary has already asked banks and the offices to function normally during the bandh, while warning the state government officials that action will be taken if they do not attend office.
