Minor girl molested repeatedly

SHILLONG: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly molested by one Cleverstar Kharmujai on several occasions.
Police informed that a lady lodged a complaint that on May 25, she came to know that the accused had molested her nine-year-old daughter on several occasions at Mawlai Mawdatbaki, Shillong.
The accused is already in judicial custody in connection with a case under the POCSO Act.
When contacted, police informed that the accused had been arrested on an earlier occasion for molesting a girl in the area.
Mawlai Police has registered three cases against the accused.
In another incident, local residents of Kyndong Lamet, Nongthymmai, Sohra, assaulted one Homes Syngai for allegedly attempting to molest a 35-year-old woman in the village on June 1 around 9 pm.
The accused sustained injuries and was shifted to CHC Sohra from where he was referred to Shillong Civil Hospital.

KHADC MDCs urged to ensure passage of VAB

SHILLONG: The Synjuk Ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Shnong under Mawkynrew constituency has expressed concern over the differences between the MDCs of the PDF and ARPA over the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2015.
The Synjuk held its general meeting on Wednesday and urged the MDCs of both the ruling coalition and the opposition in the KHADC to work in tandem to ensure the safe passage of the bill.
According to the Synjuk, the most important aspect was the passage of the bill to end the current stalemate in view of the High Court ruling on December 10 last year which had stripped the powers of the Rangbah Shnong.
JHADC passes Bill
The JHADC has passed the JHAD (Establishment of Elaka and Village and Election, Appointment, Powers, Function and Jurisdiction of Dolloi/Sordar and Waheh Shnong) Bill, 2015 through voice vote during a special session held on Wednesday.

State gears up for World Environment Day on June 5

SHILLONG: Shillong College Academic Society in collaboration with Shillong College is organizing a number of programmes including distribution of leaflets on environment awareness and tips for better environment through newspaper vendors and volunteers and also holding elocution contest, sit-n-draw contest, quiz and debate competitions for students of Class I to Degree level, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
The programme is sponsored by State Council of Science, Technology and Environment, and SBI, Laitumkhrah Branch.
West Garo Hills District is all set to celebrate World Environment Day in a big way with the theme Clean & Green Meghalaya with an elaborate plan to involve school children, youth from colleges and universities, Nokma Council, GHADC, Forest and other line departments, NGOs and other stakeholders.
Series of competitions like clay model making, essay, drawing and painting, would be organised and a plan has been mulled to gift a sapling to each and every participant.
NEEPCO, in association with Institution of Engineers India, Meghalaya state centre, will also celebrate World Environment Day on June 5 at the NEEPCO Auditorium, Shillong.

Music album to be released on environmental awareness

SHILLONG: The Partners of Pla Iew Club with the aid of East Khasi Hills DC’s office is releasing a first-of-its-kind music album on environmental awareness titled ‘Meghalaya Green Echo’s’ as part of the World Environment Day celebration on June 5 to be organized by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority in collaboration with the Forest and Environment Department at the State Convention Centre.
Club president Nicholas J Kharnami said the album is a self-composed compilation in five languages – Khasi, Jaintia, Garo, Hindi and English. “This compilation is the effort of seven voices chosen through auditions,” he said, adding, 1000 copies will be distributed on the launch day.
