SHILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Tuesday appealed to her brother and former Home Minister R.G. Lyngdoh to come forward with some concrete suggestion to help restore normalcy in trouble torn Garo Hills region. ”
I still remember the feeling of fear among residents of Khasi-Jaintia Hills region when militancy was at its peak during the late 90s. The same situation has gripped the people of Garo Hills now which Shillong had faced over a decade ago,” she said while speaking at function also attended by her brother.
She also congratulated and credited her sibling for having taken a stand against militants operating in the KhasiJaintia Hills region.
“It was the efforts of my brother along with the support of the citizens that resulted in depletion of militant activities in this part of the State. It is really horrifying even when we recall the situation which we experience during those days,” Ampareen said.
Recounting her visit to Baghmara during the Independence Day celebration last month, she said that the current situation in Garo Hills was pathetic due to the growing militant activities. “I would like to appeal to my brother and to any focused citizen to look into what needs to be done in Garo Hills,” she said. According to her, education in Garo Hills had come to a complete stand still and business was suffering. “I personally feel that residents of Shillong should lend a helping hand to the community in Garo Hills by sharing our past experiences,” she said.
