12th South Asian Games in Guwahati, Shillong from Jan 10
Shillong: The 12th South Asian Games (SAG) will be held in Guwahati and Shillong from January 10 to 22 next year and preparations were on for the multi-sporting event in both states. “The South Asian Games will be held from January 10 to 22 in Guwahati and Shillong,” Meghalaya sports secretary F R Kharkongor said, adding the state will host seven disciplines, including archery, boxing, wushu, taekwondo, table tennis and badminton and Assam would host 13 other disciplines. Preparation for the Games has already begun in Meghalaya, Kharkongor said. The SAG would see participation of around 2,500 athletes from the eight member-countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The last edition of the SAG was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2010. (PTI)
SPL: Rangdajied United ride on Bansharai’s goal
Shilong: Coming out of a first match loss, Rangdajied United secured their first three points of the Shillong Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Nangkiew Irat at Polo Grounds. The Blues successfully took on the task of opening the tournament with a tight finish while Nangkiew suffered their second loss in as many games. It was Bansharai Sunn’s decisive 13th minute goal that put the Blues ahead, putting pressure on Nangkiew Irat. Rangdajied defended well to prevent their opponents from finding a goal before finishing the match with a 1-0 score.
Jaintia Eastern College to face Lady Keane in final
Shillong: In the Inter College Football (Women) football tournament, Jaintia Eastern College defeated Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat, 1-0. In the second match Lady Keane College defeated NEHU, 3-0. Finals will be played on September 10.
Neymar’s brace helps Brazil thrash hapless USA 4-1
London: Neymar scored twice as Brazil cruised past the United States 4-1 in an international friendly tie at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. Givanildo Hulk put the tourists ahead following a high cross by Willian in the ninth minute before Neymar doubled the lead in the second half. Subsequently, Rafinha scored his first international goal in the 64th minute as he flicked the ball behind his own right foot and then fired past goalkeeper Brad Guzan to give the five-time World Cup champions an unassailable 3-0 lead, the Guardian reported. Neymar added his second goal three minutes later before Danny Williams scored a consolation goal for USA in injury time. The Americans will next take on Mexico in the crucial CONCACAF Cup match in October. (ANI)
