SHILLONG: Umsning Police has allegedly tried to convince the mother of a 12-year-old rape victim to compromise with the accused and withdraw the complaint.
The family of the girl, who is a resident of Umran Dairy, Ri Bhoi alleged that the minor was raped by one Victorious Ranee of Marngar village in West Khasi Hills on September 5 but instead of taking action against the accused, the police tried to convince the mother of the victim to compromise with the accused.
A relative of the minor, Isrin L Mawnai said informed that the accused had raped the child while she was at her house with her two younger brothers aged five and two respectively.
“Taking advantage of the situation, the accused raped the girl. After hearing the stifled cries of the child, a neighbour rushed to the house and found the man leaving the house,” the relative alleged.
After close inspection bruises were found on different parts of the body of the victim and she was rushed to the Nongpoh Civil Hospital where doctors confirmed that there was an attempt to rape.
“But surprisingly, the doctors, in the medical report, did not mention anything about the bruises on the child’s body,” the relative said.
The attempt on the part of Umsning Police to convince the mother to compromise left the family and NGOs flabbergasted. Allegedly, it was only after opposition and pressure from NGOs and the family that they discarded the idea and arrested the accused.
Meanwhile, Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, G Kharwanlang refused to accept the allegation and informed that the accused had been arrested and remanded to 5 days in police custody.
