Siddeque, who served as the Border Areas Development and Cooperation Minister in the current term, was dropped by Gogoi last year after he sided with the dissidents, led by former minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who recently left the party to join the BJP. Siddeque represents Karimganj (South) assembly constituency.
The Assam cabinet can have a a maximum strength of 19, including the Chief Minister. Congress has currently a total strength of 78 MLAs in the 126-member state assembly. (PTI)
