IIT student found hanging in hostel
Chennai: A young M Tech Student of IIT Madras allegedy committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room in the institution’s campus on Monday night. Police sources said N Narendra Kumar Reddy (23), hailing from Kadapa District in Andhra Pradesh, was found hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room. He had just returned from his native where he had gone to take part in Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at his home. When he did not come out of his room for lunch and dinner,his friends became suspicious and went to his room and through the window, found his body hanging from the ceiling and informed the police. The exact cause for his taking the extreme step was not known. Police seized his laptop. No suicide note was found, police added. (UNI)
3,000 workers on strike in Jharkhand
Ranchi: Nearly 3,000 daily wage and contract labourers went on a strike in Jharkhand from Tuesday, demanding preference in filling up around 600 posts in the state electricity board, an official said. The Jharkhand electricity board had published an advertisement for recruitment of people to 597 posts following which the Jharkhand Power Technical Labour Association (JPTLA) demanded preference should be given to people working as daily wage workers or skilled contract labourers. “The vacancies do not mention giving preference to daily wage workers and contract workers which is a violation of the agreement reached with the board in the past. The board had earlier agreed to give preference if a regular appointment was to be made” JPTLA president Ajay Rai told IANS. He said: “To protest the move, 3,000 daily wage and contract workers went on a strike from Tuesday”. “People are working for last 15 to 20 years with the hope of getting a regular job,” he said. The strike may lead to further deterioration in the electricity supply in the state capital, which is already witnessing 10 to 14 hours of daily power cuts. (IANS)
42 women arrested for illegal distillation in UP
Rampur (UP): Forty two women were among 85 persons arrested by Excise department during raids in a month for illicit distillation of liquor here, official said. In August, over 85 persons were nabbed for the illegal distillation of liquor and its sale and 50 per cent of them were women, District Excise Officer, Radhey Shyam Tiwari said yesterday. “During the month of August, 5,000 litres of intoxicating material, besides 13,000 litres of ‘Lahan’, a raw material out of which 4,000 litres of liquor could be extracted was recovered by the sleuths of the Excise department,” Tiwari said. He said that prior to August’s raids, it was difficult for the male constables to arrest women culprits. “Now that we are equipped with lady constables and the protests raised by the offenders demanding lady constables has been obliterated with 50 per cent of women being arrested out of 80-90 persons,” he said. The Superintendent of Police was previously requested to avail female police and the process needed longer time thus helping illegal distillers to carry distillation and sales easily without any hindrance, Tiwari added. MP HC restores appointments of 28 lab technicians
Jabalpur: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued directives to restore the appointments of 28 lab technicians in the Bundelkhand Medical College. A single-bench of Justice SS Kemkar issued the order on Monday while hearing 20 petitions filed by Ranjana Srivastava and others in this regard. The petitions stated that they were appointed as lab technicians in 2010. However, their appointments were cancelled three years later by stating that recruitment process was marred by irregularities. The petitioners told the court that a department inquiry was instituted against the administrative officer who conducted the recruitment process. However, the inquiry gave him a lean chit. The petitioners? counsel SR Tamrakar contended that when the administrative officer was provided clean chit, why were the applicants being punished by cancelling their appointments. The court directed that the order cancelling the appointments be annulled and the appointments be restored. (UNI)
Dejected disabled man sets himself on fire in MP
Bhopal: A differently-abled man in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district set himself on fire on being disallowed to recite his poems before Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, lauding the government’s initiatives like the ‘save girl child’. Anuj Jain, 22, who has been overwhelmed by Chouhan government’s various initiatives like cleanliness drive and save girl child wished to recite his poems before the chief minister. But on approaching various offices, he was mocked. Deeply hurt, he set himself on fire on Monday. He was hospitalised in critical condition, an official said. Divisional Commissioner R.K. Mathur, who has ordered a probe into the incident, told IANS that necessary arrangements would be ensured for Jain’s treatment. (IANS)
Muslim man performs last rites of Hindu friend
Bhopal: Rising above religious boundaries, a Mulsim man has performed last rites of his Hindu friend Santosh Singh Thakur in Madhya Pradesh’s Baitul district. After arranging all the necessary items required for the last rites, Abdul Razzak cremated Santosh’s body in accordance with the Hindu rituals. Santosh collapsed in a hospital after prolonged illness on September 20. The labourer and his wife Chhayabai were childless and they also had no relatives around. So, Razzaq, his friend, stepped forward to conduct the rituals. Razzaq, who plies an auto-rickshaw, said his friendship was not based on a religious plank and that ” I performed my duties as a friend”. (IANS)
NRI deposits in Kerala banks over Rs.1 lakh crore
Thiruvananthapuram: The deposits made by Non Residents (NR) in Kerala banks crossed the Rs.1 lakh crore mark by June 30 this year, according to a report released here on Tuesday. The State Level Bankers Committee report said the total deposit was Rs.1,17,349 crore — an almost 25 percent jump from Rs.94,097 crore as on June 30, 2014. NR deposits in the Kerala banks have been growing over the years. They totalled Rs.75,883 crore on June 30, 2013. The latest study report of S. Irudayarajan said 90 percent of Kerala’s 23.63 lakh diaspora is working in Middle-East countries, of which United Arab Emirates accounts for 38.7 percent, followed by Saudi Arabia at 25.2 percent. Kerala’s bank State Bank of Travancore led the field with NR deposits of Rs.28,228 crore, followed closely by Federal Bank with Rs.24,736 crore. (PTI)
