SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep United Awakening Movement (HUAM) has strongly opposed to the proposal of the Assam Rifles to construct a school and hospital at Umran Dairy in Ri-Bhoi district.
“We are opposing this proposal to construct the school and hospital since we suspect that the main agenda behind these projects was to create permanent camp of the Assam Rifles in the area,” HUAM president GK Raswai told newsmen here on Thursday.
‘‘We have seen the situation in Shillong city where there were many cases of illegal encroachment of the Army especially in the areas where there are headquarters of the Army and other paramilitary forces like the BSF and Assam Rifles,” Raswai said.
“We have also told the Village not to issue any No Objection Certificate (NOC) with regards to purchasing the plot of land,” he said.
Raswai said that according to the headman, the plot of land measuring approximately 200 acres which the Assam Rifles is planning to buy belongs to Nehlang Lyngdoh former MLA from Jaintia Hills District.
After strong opposition from various quarters the Dorbar has decided to put on hold the issuing of NOC for now so that they can discuss the matter further at a grand Dorbar of the village slated to take place on February, 2016.
