SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Pynshngain N Syiem on Sunday indicated that he was likely to file an appeal before the court on the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) Amendment Bill, 2015 by the State Government.
“I already had a consultation with my legal experts to examine the possibilities of filing an appeal before the court against the passing of the bill. We will further examine the matter before going ahead with the court appeal,” Syiem, who is also an elected legislator from Mawsynram constituency, informed here.
Mentioning that the State Government had announced implementation of the amendment bill with effect from October 1, the KHADC CEM said, “As per my understanding, the amendment bill cannot come into force unless it is approved by the Governor as he might seek queries from the Government taking into account that it is a very important bill.”
Syiem also stated that he had held discussions with his supporters and others on whether he should resign as an MLA or as an MDC. “I am sure that things will be clearer within the next few days,” he added.
MLA-cum-MDC from Mairang, Metbah Lyngdoh, said he was yet to arrive at any kind of decision since he had not met his supporters and leaders from his constituency.
“I will hold a meeting with my supporters and leaders in my constituency on Monday. I need to hold a series of meeting with my supporters before arriving at any decision,” he said.
Asked if he had consulted any legal expert on the matter, he said he will hold consultations with everyone including legal experts to examine the possibilities of filing an appeal in the court.
“I understand we have limited time to take decisions since the State Government has decided to enforce the Bill from October 1,” Lyngdoh said.
Out of the eight MLAs-cum-MDCs, H.D.R. Lyngdoh and Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit have already resigned as members of the KHADC while K.P. Pangniang is set to quit as MDC after holding a meeting with his supporters at Nongstoin on Friday.
Incidentally, NCP MLA-cum-MDC Sanbor Shullai, UDP’s H.B. Nongsiej and Stephanson Mukhim (Independent) have so far been silent on their future course of action.
