Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway on Monday said it is likely to start passenger services in the newly constructed broad gauge line between Lumding and Silchar from November this year.
“Currently goods trains are running on the new track. We are hopeful of starting the passenger services from first week of November,” Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager R K Gupta said.
The expansion work to broad gauge from metre gauge was completed a few months ago and goods train have been running since then, he said.
“However, we have seen some cracks in tunnels while running the goods trains. This is because of the very difficult terrain and heavy rains this year. We will do the repair works and the start commercial operations,” Gupta said.
He refuted allegation that sub-standard material was used during construction work and said “This is a normal phenomenon and that is why we run goods trains initially in any new line. This helps in settling down the construction.” Gupta today unveiled the new time table for the Railways, which would come into effect from October 1. (PTI)
