SHILLONG: Associate professor, cardiovascular department, NEIGRIHMS, Dr Manish Kapoor has said that there are more cases of high blood pressure in North East than the rest of the country.
Addressing a press conference at Pinewood Hotel here on Monday, on the eve of World Heart Day, Dr Kapoor said that people in North East are more prone to high blood pressure due to intake of tea in high amount, food habits and lifestyle.
“In NE, people are dependent on non vegetarian food and the fruit diet is less,” he said. He also informed that the intake of salt should be less than five grams a day for a normal person, whereas it should be less than two grams for people with hyper tension.
According to Dr Kapoor, Indians are physically inactive which increases the chances of cardiovascular diseases, even as he added that health care in the region and the country is slowly improving. In India, out of the estimated population of more than 1.27 billion, about 45 million people suffer from coronary artery disease.
