SHILLONG: RTI activist Michael Syiem has filed a PIL in the High Court of Meghalaya on Wednesday questioning the relevance of   autonomous district councils in Meghalaya.
However, the PIL is yet to be admitted and the matter will come up for hearing on Thursday.
When contacted, Syiem said that he filed the PIL in his individual capacity.
Syiem has made the Centre, (State Government and the district council as parties.
According to Syiem, he was compelled to file the PIL due to the ongoing tussle between the State Government and the District Councils.
“What I feel is if the district council is not relevant, abolish it and  if it is still relevant, there should be clarity on the role of district council  at a time when  there is clash between State  Government and district councils on laws passed by both the constitutional bodies,” Syiem added.
