Kohima: Retired Chief Secretaary of Nagaland, Banuo Z Jamir, who is also the first woman to occupy the highest position in the state’s bureaucracy, was on Friday honoured with the prestigious Classic Award of the year instituted by Classic Club Kohima.
Banuo was given the award for her “exemplified integrity, unequivocal commitment and outstanding leadership throughout her career as an administrator of the highest level”. This was mentioned in the citation awarded to her by the club through Governor P B Acharya at a function here this evening.
Banuo started her career as an administrator in the capacity of Under Secretary, Land Revenue, Government of Nagaland in 1979 and held various posts as bureaucrat.
She was the first Naga woman IAS officer and the first woman in the state to be posted as Additional Deputy Commissioner to a sub-division and later as Deputy Commission of two districts. She was the first woman to be posted as Commissioner, Nagaland and the first woman Commandant General of the Village Guards.
Finally Banuo retired as Chief Secretary of the state in September 2014.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor was appreciative of the philanthropic works carried out by Classic Club Kohima while also congratulating Banuo for her achievement.
In her speech, Banuo acknowledged the constant support and prayer of her husband Alemtemshi Jamir, family members, relatives and her maternal and paternal grand-mothers for being her role models.(PTI)
