SHILLONG: As part of the Air Force Day celebrations, the two-day “Vajra Air Fest” commenced at the advanced landing ground at Upper Shillong on Saturday.
The Air Fest which showcases the “Spirit of Adventure” that epitomizes the Indian Air Force is being organised by the Eastern Air Command.
The fest commenced with the release of balloons by the Chief Guest, Air Marshal, C Hari Kumar, Air Officer Commanding in Chief Eastern Air Command.
A sizeable crowd that comprised of school children among others was enthralled by the fly past by three Mi-17 helicopters in ‘Vic’ formation. The formation was led by Wing Commander Mukul Khare of 118 Helicopter unit known as “The Challengers”. But the loudest cheer was heard during the MiG-27 fly past at 840 Kmph. The three aircraft formation was led by Group Captain G Singh.
The Air Force commandos, “Garuds”, performed the slithering operation and finally the eight “Air Devils”, the skydiving team of the Indian Air Force, skydived and landed t the designated area to the thrill of the crowd.
Among other attractions in the fest were the static display of helicopters which were free to be photographed. The Air Force Commandos also had on display the specialized equipment used by them.
Food stalls were also in place. The Air Fest will conclude on Sunday.
