Hundreds take part in cleaning drive

SHILLONG: A crowd of more than 800 people from NSS, 67 Bn CRPF, the HQ and 4 units of National Cadet Corp (NCC), Bharat Scouts and Guides, the teachers and students of PGT College, Shillong College, Shillong Commerce College, BK, Bajoria School, Garo Union School, and 16 other organisations, departments and agencies took part in a special cleaning drive as part of Swacch Bharat on the PGT Road Stretch on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
The Urban Affairs Minister, Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh, Chief Secretary, Barkos Warjri, Urban Affairs Director cum SBM Mission Director, B Dutta, CEO of Shillong Municipal Board, E Kharmalki, Commandant of 67 Bn CRPF, H S Guman and a host of departmental officials and the Bomfyle Road Headmen and EC of Laitumkhrah were present during the cleaning drive.
Prior to starting the Cleaning Drive the ‘Swachhta Pledge’ was administered to the crowd by a street sweeper.
The Shillong Commerce College and PGT College Road that became a mini marten dumping ground was cleaned in a three-hour-long cleaning drive and eight metric tons of garbage was collected as a result..
The cleaners spread white lime after the clean up was over.
However, on October 5, some bundles of garbage were again found freshly thrown on the road stretch.
