Workshop on scientific fish farming organised

SHILLONG:  A one day workshop on Scientific Fish Farming was organized by the Division of Fisheries, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR –RC) for NEHR, Umiam in collaboration with Tyllilang Progressive Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Sohra on September 3 at MGNREGA Community Hall (BDO Office) under Shella Block.
The aim of the workshop is to popularize fish farming activity in the State and to build capacity of the tribal farmers in scientific fish farming and to provide critical inputs such as fish seeds, nets etc. in the first year under the Tribal Sub Plan.
The workshop was inaugurated by Sub-divisional fisheries officer of the department of fisheries, Sohra, H.  Papang.
45 farmers attended the programme and were trained on the various aspects of fish farming. The workshop also demonstrated water testing for pH level.
A total of 15000 fish fingerlings, 50 bags of lime and 29 pH paper packs were distributed to all farmers under the TSP by the ICAR and three cast nets and three dragnets were provided for community use.
Tyllilang society has dug out 12 small to medium size fish ponds to distribute fish fingerlings to the tribal farmers of the area for livelihood where more than 10,000 fish fingerlings were provided by the Fisheries Department, ICAR. It covers a total of 3815 sq MT water spread area for fish rearing at Tharia, Umdud, near Meghalaya-Bangladesh border.
