TURA: Opposition NPP has accused the Congress of misusing relief material meant for flood victims to garner votes in the Selsella region of West Garo Hills.
The NPP has alleged that contesting Congress candidate from Rochonpara constituency of Selsella, Malcolm M Sangma, was made a distributor for relief material in the plains belt region and had used that as a cover to provide relief material during election campaigning.
“Malcolm is the nephew of Congress minister Clement Marak and his people were distributing rice in Ujjengre village of Selsella under the pretext of relief distribution, last week. When there are no floods where is the need for relief?,” complained NPP working president and former leader of the opposition Conrad K Sangma.
He added that it was only after the NPP raised a hue and cry that a truckload of rice coming in from Dhubri and destined for Selsella was halted by authorities in Singimari area.
“The Congress plan was to replicate a similar exercise in other constituencies for the GHADC elections but because of our timely detection it was halted,” claimed Sangma adding that the matter would be taken up with the Centre and the Election Commission of India.
