Project Sunrise to fight AIDS set to be launched in NE

SHILLONG: A two-day review meeting of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) IV, Implementation in North East Region, kicked-off on Monday at Hotel Pegasus Crown.
The meeting is being attended by experts from the field of AIDS control from different parts of the country.
Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh addressed the gathering and said, “Drug use figures in the State is dismal.”
“The experts in the field are not just researching on how people get AIDS but they are also trying to come up with necessary intervention required to ensure safety precautions as well,” she informed.
Commenting on Project Sunrise, which will be implemented in the North East, she said, “Project Sunrise will be taking necessary action and planning to ensure AIDS will be a thing of the past.”
Project Sunrise aims to accelerate the HIV/AIDS response for People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in the North East region.
This project will work in coordination with key stakeholders – the State AIDS Control Society, NGO partners and others.

KHNAM youth wing demands resignation of CM, cabinet

SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) Youth Wing has asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and his entire Cabinet to step down in the wake of the State Government’s inability to control certain elements in the society.
“There is a loss of over 600 crore rupees due to the NGT ban and till date the Mining Policy has not been framed; there is also the Public Distribution System (PDS) leakage which is to the tune of 106 crore rupees which is largely due to corruption,” said Batkupar Wahlang, general secretary, KHNAM, while coming down heavily on the MUA-II Government.
“At the same time, it could not provide necessary steps to ensure safety of women and the Khasi people residing near borders,” he added.
Wahlang also slammed the chief minister for not taking any steps to maintain peace in Garo Hills.

Over 400 rounded up in city for drinking, indecent activities

SHILLONG: As many as 420 persons have been convicted for drinking in public places, indulging in indecent acts and reckless driving in Shillong in the last two months.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang informed that 203 non FIR cases were taken up   in August and September against persons consuming alcohol in public places and committing nuisance, indecent acts committed by couples in public places like Golf Link, reckless driving and disturbing peace during the night.
He informed that a fine of Rs.10,25,000 was realized from the offenders as fine by the Court.
The district police will continue its drive against such nuisance, Kharkrang added.

Awareness programme on drug abuse, cyber crimes held

SHILLONG: The NSS Unit of Sankardev College, Shillong, along with the Co-Curricular Committee of the College organized a special awareness programme for students of the College on drugs, internet and crime and other related issues on Monday. The programme was attended by East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang as the resource person.
The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills with the sole objective of bringing awareness and making the students conscious on the menace of drugs and cyber crime which is growing at a very alarming rate in Shillong.

Pre-Puja get together organised in city

SHILLONG: The Monitoring cum Implementation Committee (MCIC), South Shillong constituency organised a Pre-Durga, Lakshmi and Kali Puja ‘Get together of Harmony 2015’ at the RLSSCO Community Hall, Bishnupur, Shillong on Sunday.
Apart from the public, the programme was attended by various Puja committees, members of Dorbar Shnong, and various NGOs.
The function was celebrated by cutting and distribution of a cake by local legislator and president, MCIC, Sanbor Shullai, followed by distribution and handing of donation to 24 Puja committees sanctioned through his MLA salary amounting to Rs.4 lakh.
On the occasion, Shullai and members of the MCIC wished the people of 19th South Shillong constituency in particular and citizens of Meghalaya in general a peaceful celebration of a blessed Durga & Kali Puja 2015.

Ri Bhoi organisation threatens action against Airtel, Aircel

NONGPOH: Peeved over the apathetic attitude of Aircel and Airtel companies in discharging better service to mobile users in and around Marngar and Umsawnongbri in Ri Bhoi district, the Ri Bhoi Youth Council (RBYC), warned that it would take stern action against the erring companies if better service was not provided at the earliest.
RBYC leader Mission Tron lamented that irregularities of mobile services in the area have troubled the public for the last one month.
He also stated that despite several complaints being lodged, the two companies failed to meet the public demand.
