Work on Umiam truck lay-by-bay stalled

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has opposed the PWD proposal to construct a truck lay-by-bay near Umiam.
Source informed that the PWD had started constructing the truck lay-by-bay near Umiam  but the power body objected the   move saying  that “the land belongs to MeECL.”
According to sources, the work had to be abandoned following the objection even as sources also added that the   truck lay-by-bay  could have been utilized by tourists since a lot of tourists stop at Umiam bridge to have a view of the  of the lake.
In a bid to resolve the problem necessary documents have been submitted by the PWD to MeECL .
“The work will now start only when the ownership of the land is confirmed,” sources said.
The PWD will also construct another truck lay-by-bay at Mawlai shortly.

CPI slams Govt for financial mismanagement in State

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Council of the Communist Party of India has come down heavily on the State Government for the poor financial management of the State which, it said, has resulted in hurdles in acquiring scholarships for students and payment of wages of muster roll workers and Anganwadi workers.
They party, during a meeting held at the CPI office at Quinton Road, Shillong, on Monday, observed that there has been tremendous price rise of all essential commodities like pulses, oil etc., as a result of which the common people are suffering.
The meeting also took note of the indiscriminate throwing of garbage in Shillong, and the lack of civic amenities in Shillong, bad road conditions, overflow of drainageand disregard to vehicular emissions by the State Pollution Control Board.

Catch and release fishing competition organised in city

SHILLONG: The second edition of the catch and release fish was held at Ward’s Lake here with over 300 anglers participating in the competition.
The big catch of the day was a 9.5 kilo Grass Carp fish caught by Barlin Lyngdoh, who was awarded a cash prize of Rs.6000 and a certificate.
The second and third prize winners received cash award of Rs.4000 and Rs.3000 respectively along with certificates. Their catches were weighed in at 9.3 kg and 5.5 kg, respectively.
The competition was organised by the Department of Fisheries which will hold the 3rd Aqua Fest in the State on Saturday.

STP realizes Rs 8.28 lakh fine

SHILLONG: Shillong Traffic Police has realized fines of Rs.8,28,200 which has been deposited in the Government Treasury.
The STP informed that during the month of September, it detected over 2284 traffic violations.
With Puja celebrations round the corner and to avoid inconvenience to commuters, the Shillong Traffic Police has informed that it will be very strict with illegal parking and will resort to towing of vehicles.
On Wednesday, STP will unveil another action against traffic violation at Sadar Police Station.
