From Dubai to Mumbai, migrants flock to Bihar to vote
Patna: Thousands of migrants are flocking to Bihar from far and wide to vote in the assembly elections, an enthusiasm not seen earlier. Rehan Khan from Dubai is one of them. “I was to return to Dubai in early October but I extended my leave to vote next Friday (October 16),” Khan, originally from Gaya town, about 100 km from here, told IANS. “I will return to Dubai only after fulfilling my duty as citizen of the country,” said Khan, a business development manager in Dubai. Mohammed Atiqur Rahman from Saudi Arabia voted on Monday in the first phase of the five-phase elections that ends on November 5. A resident of Samastipur district, Rahman said he was determined to vote. Rahman, who has been working in Riyadh for 15 years as a salesman in a furniture company, said: “I felt it was my duty and right to vote.” NRIs of Bihari-origin in the US are also keeping a close watch on the staggered elections. “I am keenly watching the campaigning through Internet and TV. Immolation: Teacher held; FIR against 300 for creating ruckus
Gonda (UP): 300 people were booked on charges of creating ruckus and vandalising an intermediate college following the death of a girl student who immolated herself four days ago alleging harassment by three teachers, one of whom has been arrested, police said. Dipak Fernando was arrested on Monday night, while hunt was on to nab two other accused Aftab Ahmad and Rashmi Kanpur, Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Singh today said. Yesterday, the agitated crowd allegedly vandalised the college premises and assaulted the accused teachers. Following which, the principal lodged an FIR against 300 unidentified persons, he said. The girl, student of the private intermediate college, was under depression and allegedly set herself afire in Kotwali area on Friday after which she was admitted to a hospital where she died on Saturday night. A letter was recovered from the girl’s bag in which she had accused the three teachers for taking the extreme step, police said. On the basis of this, the victim’s father had lodged an FIR against the three teachers on Sunday. In the complaint, it has been alleged that Deepak Kumar teased the girl about which a grievance was lodged with the college authorities, but no action was taken. (PTI)
Girl dies during Skrillex concert in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: A 23-year-old student died of cardiac arrest during a concert of US music artist Skrillex at HUDA ground here, police said on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Aanchal Arora, police said. The fashion designing student felt uneasy and then collapsed during the concert on Sunday evening. She died on the way to hospital, they said. The doctors said that she died of cardiac arrest that could have been induced due to lack of oxygen. She lived in Delhi’s Pitampura area and was at the concert with her friends. One of her friends also fell unconscious during the concert, police added. The organisers were expecting a gathering around 6,500 spectators at HUDA ground, but the number swelled to over 8,000, leading to chaos, they said. The police have lodged an FIR against the organiser and started its investigation. The organiser has refused to comment on the issue. (PTI)
