GHADC polls

SHILLONG: The final percentage of GHADC polls held on Monday stood at 67.86 with the District Council Affairs department terming the election as ‘successful’ despite the boycott call given by several pressure groups and militants.   The poll percentage in the 2009 GHADC election was 79.48 but at that time there was no boycott of polls.Commissioner and Secretary, District Council Affairs department, J. Lyngdoh said the government was happy with the poll percentage. While Babelapara constituency in West Garo Hills registered the maximum percentage of 85.44, the lowest polling was recorded at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills (36.67%) while Tura in West Garo Hills recorded 44.04 per cent.South West Garo Hills which is the district of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and his wife Dikkanchi D Shira recorded the maximum district wise percentage with 80.50 followed by West Garo Hills (71.66) South Garo Hills (65.04) North Garo Hills (61.23) and East Garo Hills (52.36).Lyngdoh said the order of the High Court of Meghalaya banning bandhs had somehow helped the participation of the Government servants in the election process which ensured the success of the polls. No re-poll: Lyngdoh has ruled out any re-poll in the four polling booths which witnessed zero voting. No one turned up at Rongsakgre polling station in South Garo Hills which had 303 eligible voters, Pakregre polling station of Damas constituency in North Garo Hills and polling stations at  Dorengkigre village and Nengsang Adugre village (East Garo Hills).Lyngdoh said since there was no booth capturing or law and order problems, the government decided not to hold any re-polling in these four polling stations after getting assessment from respective returning officers.Counting: The official said all arrangements have been made for the counting of votes for Thursday. The counting of votes will be held in all the five district headquarters of Garo Hills.”The EVMs have been kept in the strong rooms and additional security arrangements have been made,” he added.
