Demand call made to Catholic nun

Resubelpara: Sister Rose Kayathinkara (72), a recipient of Pa Togan Nengminza Awards and numerous recognitions for social service, received a demand note from a member of a militant group in Garo Hills.
Sister Rose, popularly known as ‘rubber sister’ of North Garo Hills, for introducing rubber plantation in the region, expressed shock over the development.
A successful one in her social service, Sister Rose pioneered the Mendipathar Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd., travelled all over the rural areas of the district encouraging rubber planters in various ways besides initiating various other social activities to promote the livelihood of the poor people.
Toiling for the good of others, she fell ill and went to Kerala for medical treatment.
While in her stay in the medical centre, a phone call from an unknown caller introducing himself as the area commander of a certain organization demanded Rs 20,000 supposedly for the welfare of the people of Garo Hills.
Despite the Sister’s request to give details of the so called welfare work, the caller insisted on the need for handing over the money t a certain venue without asking any questions.
The calls came on August 7, 31, September 7 and finally several times on September 16.
Since Sister Rose did not receive the calls, the extortionist sent a threatening message stating “there will be no mercy here after we find you by the end of October”.
An unidentified young man also went to the Charity Sister Complex, Mendipathar introducing himself as a poultry farmer seeking appointment with Sister Rose.
Following all this, the governing body of the Mendipathar Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd. lodged an FIR with the office of the Superintendant of Police North Garo Hills on September 22.
District SP Ramesh Singh assured that the police will do its best to nab the culprit.
The members of the MMCS also urged the State Government to take note of the matter and brin the miscreants to book.
