SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has granted two weeks’ time to the Superintendent of Police, CBI, Shillong, to submit the preliminary report of the investigation done by the probe agency to ascertain details of the number of cases in which building owners have been benefitted by the acts of commission and omission on the part of officers of MUDA.
The High Court also directed the Chief Engineer, Military Engineering Service, Shillong, to provide the assistance of a civil engineer of the department to the Superintendent of Police, CBI forthwith for examining the records of MUDA.
Earlier, J.M. Thangkhiew, a practicing  advocate of the High Court and petitioner-in-person, informed the court that he has filed an undertaking to the effect that he will pursue the high rise buildings matters to their logical conclusion and contest all the matters filed in the Supreme Court.
During the hearing, N. Khamrang, Additional Superintendent of Police and in charge SP, CBI, Shillong submitted a written request for grant of minimum three months’ time to go through the documents seized during the course of preliminary enquiry.
The Court said that the SP, CBI, Shillong can first concentrate on the role of town planners, engineers and secretaries of MUDA and the beneficiaries of their orders and submit a brief chart for assistance to the Court so as to find out whether the materials collected by the CBI disclose any criminal offence or if the cases can be referred to the State Government for disciplinary action on the administrative side.
