UP CM cautions against parties relying on ‘branding, marketing’
Bareilly (UP): In an apparent attack on the BJP, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said people should remain cautious of parties which rely on “branding and marketing” and have nothing to do with development. “Slogans like “Acche din” were part of branding and marketing. Now people have understood it. You all should remain alert with such parties,” Akhilesh said while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Bareilly- Bageshwar Highway. On providing financial aid to families of victims of various incidents, Akhilesh said, it was the responsibility of the government to help them and making an issue out of it was not justified. “We are ready for a debate on the issue but some parties are trying to vitiate the communal atmosphere of the state using social media platforms and WhatsApp. Samajwadi Party can give a reply to them but the government will deal with it,” he said. Akhilesh further said the development and social welfare works initiated by his government were being followed by other states. Later, the Chief Minister left for Haldwani to greet former CM Narain Dutt Tiwari on his birthday. (PTI)
FIR registered against Maoists  who attacked police
Palakkad (Ker): An FIR was on Sunday registered against five Maoists, including a woman, who fired at police engaged in combing operations in a forest area at Kadkumanna in Agali, a remote tribal belt in Palakkad district. The Maoists armed with guns had attacked two police teams, including ‘Thunderbolt’, a special commando wing under Kerala Police, while they were engaged in routine combing operations inside the forests around 11.30 AM on Saturday, police said. When the police retaliated, the Maoists escaped into the deep forests, abandoning two plastic bags and a sack.Soman from Wayanad and Ayyapan are the first and second accused respectively in the case, police said. Cases have been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Indian Arms Act besides the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. More police have been deployed from neighbouring districts for combing operations in the area, police added. (PTI)
21-year-old Amity student shot dead
Noida: A 21-year-old student of a private university was allegedly shot dead by another student, even as the body of a class 12th student was found here, in separate incidents. Ramaraju Sandesh, a 1st year Marine Science student from Amity University was allegedly shot dead by another student at the Lotus Bouleward Apartment of Sector 100 here yesterday, Zahir Khan, SHO of sector 39 police station said. Sandesh, a native of Andhra Pradesh was shot at on the 13th floor of his rented apartment, he said, adding the assailants were known to the victim. The victim’s flatmate, Mathur alleged that there was a knock at the door following which Sandesh opened the door and was shot by two armed assailants, police said. Sandesh was staying in a rented flat with two other friends Nadeem and Mathur, Khan said, adding that he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors. However, no suicide note has been recovered and further investigation is being made from all possible angles, police said. (PTI)
Actor booked on charges of raping TV actress
Mumbai: A Bollywood actor has been booked for allegedly raping a television actress, police said on Sunday. A case has been registered against actor Vishal Thakkar under relevant sections of rape and other offences yesterday, Charkop police station’s senior inspector Ramchandra Gaikwad said. The victim, an actress who has worked in several TV serials, has alleged that the accused raped her in his house, police said, without divulging further details. An FIR has been registered against the actor. The actor has not yet been arrested. (PTI)
Hundreds clean Ganga ‘ghats’ in four states
Haridwar: Hundreds of activists on Sunday took part in a mass campaign across four states to clean numerous ‘ghats’ of the Ganges, a spiritual group here said. The mass cleaning took place at 200 points between Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand and Patna Sahib in Bihar, and also covered Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. A spokesman for Gayatri Pariwar, which organised the event, told IANS that the emphasis was both on cleaning the ‘ghats’ and spreading awareness on keeping the holy river clean. The most intense part of the campaign took place at Rishikesh and Haridwar as well as Allahabad and Varanasi. (IANS)
Dalit man hacked to death in UP
Ballia (UP): A 46-year-old Dalit man was hacked to death allegedly by unidentified persons in Parikhara Takarsan village in Bansdeeeh road area here, police said on Sunday. Bheem Ram was hacked yesterday night by some persons while he was asleep, they said. The probe is underway to find out the motive behind the incident. No arrests have so far been made in this connection, police said. (PTI)
