SHILLONG: The KHADC is yet to take a decision on conducting by-polls for the seven seats which fell vacant after the resignation of the legislators who were holding the post of MDCs following the passage of the dual post Bill.
KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem on Monday said the Council will have to examine its financial position before taking any decision on holding the by-polls in the seven seats.
He admitted that the KHADC was facing a financial crunch which was preventing immediate announcement of the by-polls and added that the council’s priority was to look after the welfare of the staff as payment of salary was becoming a stiff ask.
“We can hold the by-polls only when the financial position improves,” he told reporters.
The KHADC chief also said the Assam (and Meghalaya) Autonomous District (Constitution of District Councils) Rules 1951 is silent on holding elections to the vacant posts within six months and added that Council was free to hold the election as per its convenience.
