Shillong: As part of the Indigenous Terra Madre to be celebrated from November 3-7 in the State, NESFAS, in collaboration with the Department of Sericulture and Weaving, Meghalaya and GIZ is organising an exhibition, Eri Weaves: Looms of Change, which celebrates the skill of the artisans, their commitment to their craft, and the successful collaborative approaches of local government, organisations and entrepreneurs who support them.
On November 5, there will be a discussion on Around the Loom, addressing the sustainable futures of traditional textiles. The discussion event will begin with the screening of a documentary on eri silk commissioned by the Department of Sericulture and Weaving, GIZ and NESFAS.
ITM delegates will visit the eri weaving community of Khweng, Ri-Bhoi as part of the village visits programme on November 6.
Eri Weaves: Looms of Change will also be showcased at the Mei-Ram-ew festival on November 7 at Mawphlang. Artisans will give demonstrations and encourage the visitors to try spinning, weaving and even tasting silk worms.
