SHILLONG: After numerous delays, the expansion work for the Umroi Airport may finally pick up as the land required for the project has been made available.
Sources informed that the land required for the project is free from encumbrances and a school has also been shifted to pave way for the expansion of the airport.
According to sources, the controversial boundary has been dismantled and construction of new boundary has begun.
It may be mentioned that the Airport Authority of India has invited tenders for the instrument landing system which will be installed soon. Once installed, the Instrument Landing System would provide better visibility to flights even during bad weather.
Tenders have also been floated for repairing of the perimeter road at the airport with an estimated cost of over Rs 28 lakh and the period of completion of work is four months.
Sources also said that suitable compensation will be provided to the land and building owners even as money meant for the 12 families which are yet to receive the funds is lying in the special court and people are free to approach the court for the amount.
Following the directive of the Meghalaya High Court to demolish buildings impeding the expansion of Umroi Airport, several houses located at Umden Mission and Uden Umsaitprah village were demolished by a team of the Ri Bhoi District Administration escorted by policemen recently.
