Extortionist held, arms recovered from dacoit gang

Tura: Tura police nabbed an extortionist by the name of Phillip A Sangma while he was reportedly serving demand notes on shopkeepers of Chandmari market on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, West Garo Hills police have recovered two country made pistols and a rifle from Khokapara village of Tikrikilla based on the confession of a group of men suspected to be part of a gang of dacoits who surrendered themselves to police on Tuesday after sustained operations in the area.
As many as 23 men had given themselves up to authorities and during investigation 11 of the men, including four teens, were found to be part of the gang of dacoits.

Three MDCs appointed as chairman of Sub-Committees

TURA: Three MDCs of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) have been appointed as chairman of different Sub-Committees according to a notification issued by the Chief Executive Member (CEM).
As per the notification, GNC MDC from Amonpara, Jimberth R Marak, has been appointed as chairman of the Growers’ Association, NPP MDC from Raksamgre, Benedick R Marak, as chairman of Forest Advisory Committee and another NPP MDC from Wagesik, Sengnal R Sangma, as chairman of Resource Mobilization Committee.

Traffic arrangements for Mawphlang

SHILLONG: To encourage participation of not just visitors to Meghalaya but the city and the villages around, the ITM organisers have decided not to levy any entry fee or parking fee. The State government and the police departments have worked on parking allotments to make the operation smooth and fine tuned to make it easy for everyone to attend the programmes.
Special shuttle buses will ferry visitors to and from the parking spots at regular intervals free of cost.

Six including 3 minors held for coal extraction

SHILLONG: Police has apprehended six people including three minor boys who were attempting to extract coal in different parts of the State.
On November 3 police arrested five persons John Shadap, New Kupar Tado, Kremenskhem Shadap and two minor boys while they were extracting coal from a quarry belonging to one Krin Nongsiej at Pyndeng Shallang in West Khasi Hills.
In another incident on the same day, police apprehended one minor boy while he was extracting coal from a quarry belonging to Japlin Dkhar at Moolang village (EJH).
Meanwhile, seven trucks were found transporting coal without valid documents in violation of NGT order near Borsing Bridge at Rilang in South West Khasi Hills.
The BDO, C&RD Block Ranikor has lodged a complaint in this regard.

LJP denies ‘security deposit’ report

SHILLONG: The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) has denied media reports that party candidate Brensly Ryntathiang was unable to file his nomination on Wednesday for the Nongstoin by-election for want of money.
General Secretary of the party’s State Unit, Dinesh Gupta, on Friday said the candidate’s nomination was not accepted by the Returning Officer at Nongstoin as he was unable to complete the formalities in the prescribed time limit and not because he did not have Rs.5000 to pay as security deposit.
The party also clarified that the candidate had deposited Rs.5000 through Treasury challan.

BSF seize cattle, contraband items on international border

SHILLONG: BSF troops have seized 26 cattle at Beltoli, East Khasi Hills District, worth more than Rs.4 lakh, while being smuggled into Bangladesh from India.
The BSF has continuously been in its drive against the Cattle smugglers. The Border Security Force has intensified its operations on the Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent Trans-border crimes. The BSF has also sought cooperation of local police to enhance operation against these cattle smugglers in hinter land also.
In the last week, BSF troops seized 103 cattle, approx. 48.23 cu.ft. wooden logs, 795 bottles of liquor and other contraband items worth more than Rs.32 lakh, while being smuggled out from India to Bangladesh on the Meghalaya border during the last week.

Mawlai triple death case: Police await PM report

SHILLONG: Police are awaiting the post mortem report of one Benedik Kharmuti who allegedly killed his two minor sons, aged 4 years and 14 months respectively, before committing suicide at Mawlai.
East Khasi Hills district police chief M. Kharkrang on Friday said, “The post mortem report of the father is important, as to the motive behind the death. It is necessary to look from different angles especially his relationship with his wife and family.”
