SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has decided to support Independent candidate Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait who is contesting the mid election to the Nongstoin Assembly seat slated on November 21.
KHNAM general secretary Batskhem Wahlang informed that the decision was arrived at in a meeting convened by the party’s Central Executive Committee on November 6.
“Our intention is not to allow Congress to gain ground in Nongstoin Constituency since Congress under Mukul’s leadership has neglected the indigenous people,” Wahlang said.
The party will hold election rallies in support of Fenela, he added.
On being questioned why KHNAM did not support the HSPDP or UDP candidate, Wahlang claimed that the party had not received any call for support from the HSPDP candidate.
With regard to the UDP candidate, Wahlang claimed that the candidate has supported uranium mining in the State in      recent years. “As a party which opposes uranium mining, we will not extend support to the candidate,” he added.
Wahlang also added that in the limited time period they had, the party was unable to think of a candidate worth to replace H.S. Lyngdoh, so they had backed out, but and on receiving a letter from Fenela soliciting support, the party had decided to support her candidature.
