TUR condemns police action

JOWAI: The Movement for Indigenous People’s Rights and Livelihood-Meghalaya has slammed the District Administration and Police’s way of handling the agitation by students of Kiang Nangbah Government College protesting the failure of the State Government to fulfill their seven-point demand.
“We are shocked and dismayed by the way the Meghalaya Police handled the situation, resorting to lathi charge and use of tear gas against the students,” the MIPRL said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.
The MIPRIL also demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister in charge Education and local MLA, R. C. Laloo for not been able to fulfill the long-pending demands of the students.
“We also demand stringent action against the police and officials of the District Administration including the Deputy Commissioner, Arun K Kembhavi, who  himself chased the students, which is unbecoming of the District Magistrate who should have acted in a more professional way in this case,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) also condemned the police action on students of Kiang Nangbah College.
Angela Rangad, TUR member said, “Students of the college have been making legitimate demands and we demand that people responsible for this uncalled for tear gassing and lathi charge be held accountable.”
TUR also slammed the Government’s claims of financial instability when public money is being used for “short term festivities and shows.”
“The Government refuses to fund sectors like education, health and agriculture,” the TUR said.
