GNLA’s ‘civilian cadre’ held

SHILLONG: One John N Sangma of Nongchram, was apprehended by the villagers of Riangdim on the behest of police for extortion and taken to Shallang Police Station. A case was registered against him under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
On interrogation, Sangma revealed that he worked as a civilian cadre of the banned GNLA to identify businessmen for kidnapping, serving demand notes and to spy on police movement.
He disclosed the names of others who were working as civilian cadres to whom the GNLA pays Rs 3000 as remuneration besides commission on all successful extortions and kidnappings based on information provided by them. He was working under the West Khasi Hills command.
Meanwhile, Shallang police is on the look-out for other civilian cadres operating in the area.
Sangma further revealed that the GNLA has been recruiting civilian cadres who are not given any training in handling arms and explosives.
