SHILLONG: World Diabetes Day 2015 was observed by the North Eastern Diabetes Society and Nazareth Hospital on November 14.
In the week-long celebration, Oration, Poster and Quiz competitions were held along with a workshop on insulin therapy for working nurses of Shillong.
On the concluding day, a walkathon cum cycle rally starting from Nazareth Hospital to the State Central Library where Senior Diabetologist Dr. D.S. Sethi gave an awareness talk to the participants.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S. Dkhar said awareness must be made to the masses about preventing the disease and lauded the service rendered by Nazareth Hospital to the diabetic patients.
The participants of the programme included staff of Nazareth Hospital and their children, Rotary members Orchid City, students from Rapsbun School of Nursing and Woodland Institute of Nursing, public and students of different schools of Shillong.
In Tura, World Diabetes Day was observed in Tura Civil Hospital on Saturday under the theme ‘Healthy Living starts at Breakfast’ with an aim to coordinate diabetes advocacy as well as to create awareness on diabetes prevention and care.
During the programme, a talk on prevention of diabetes and its complications with proper diet, exercise and medical interventions was delivered by Dr. Cynthia R Marak, Diabetologist, Tura Civil Hospital.
Free blood glucose screening test for diabetes was also conducted by the department of NCD in individuals of over 25 years to rule out any signs of the disease.
Senior Specialist Doctor, Dr. G.K. Marak highlighted the importance of healthy life style to control/prevent diabetes and its complications.
