SHILLONG: Additional Chief Secretary in charge Health and Family Welfare, Y. Tsering, has stressed the need to control vector borne diseases in the North East especially in the western part of Meghalaya.
Speaking on the inaugural day of the three-day review of Implementation of Global Fund supported Projects in the seven North Eastern states, Sikkim and Odisha, here on Wednesday, Tsering hoped the deliberations, spread across different sessions over the next three days would help yield fruitful and meaningful resolutions and would also offer solutions to the problem of vector borne diseases, especially Malaria, which is highly prevalent in North East India, particularly the western parts of Meghalaya. The National Vector Borne Disease Control Society (NVBDCS) together with the Meghalaya State Vector Borne Diseases Control society (MSVBDCS) launched the three day review of Implementation of Global Fund supported Projects.
In his address, Dr. Avdhesh Kumar, Addl. Director, NVBDCP, New Delhi, said the intent of the quarterly review is to help plug the gaps and loopholes at different levels of implementation of the programmes and to offer solutions to better counter vector borne diseases.
It may be mentioned that the NVBDCP is the central nodal agency for the prevention and control of vector borne diseases like Malaria, Japanese Encephalitis, Dengue, Chikungunya, Lymphatic Filariasis and Kala- azar.
The inaugural function was chaired by K.W. Marbaniang, Secretary H& FW, Meghalaya.
