NONGSTOIN: Despite the harvesting season being in progress, the Nongstoin by poll on Saturday managed to score a high turnout of voters in every polling station, with the final turnout recorded at 81.96%, official figures released on Sunday said.
Most of the polling stations recorded above 80% turnout with Mawduh polling station recording the highest turnout at 88.83%.
As many as 334 of the 376 voters cast their votes in Mawduh on Saturday. The lowest turnout was recorded in Upper New Nongstoin at 76.25%, with 1053 votes being cast out of 1381.
Meanwhile, the results of the by election, to be announced on Tuesday, will be crucial for the Congress which is eyeing a win for its candidate Gabriel Wahlang to achieve a comfortable position in the State Assembly with 31 MLAs in the 60-member House.
A win for the Congress in the Nongstoin by election would do wonders to improve the party morale as the seat has been an HSPDP bastion for over 40 years now.
Things are no different for the HSPDP which is also expecting a win for its candidate Diosstarness Jyndiang. A new MLA in Nongstoin will rejuvenate the party which currently has only three legislators – Ardent Basaiawmoit, Witting Mawsor and K.P. Pangniang – in the Assembly.
For Independent candidate Fenela L Nonglait and UDP’s Mosklandar Marngar too, the result will be significant as it would either make or mar their bid for the 2018 Assembly polls.
