SHILLONG: Taking cognizance of the growing instances of nuisance along Sohra and Dawki road, East Khasi Hills police has decided to intensify checking along this road.
SDPO Sohra, Ian Swer informed that the police conduct checking on Saturdays and Sundays when young riders and drivers zoom their vehicles on the road creating nuisance for the residents
Few months back, Sohra police launched a crackdown on speeding bikers and those creating nuisance along the Shillong-Sohra road and detained as many as 33 people including seven girls.
He said that police would detain anyone who would create nuisance on the road. Their relatives would be called and they would be released only after paying bonds.
Swer asserted that the drive will continue till the weeks to come in view of the fact that the scenic road has become a happy hunting ground for those creating nuisance by the roadside and for speeding bikers who cause a lot of inconvenience to the passersby, tourists and others commuting along the route.
“We welcome everyone to the place but no one should create nuisance,” he said while adding that they also conduct checking to see that people do not create nuisance under the influence of liquor.
The 56-km-long road from Shillong to Sohra is a beautiful stretch of black-topped track with picturesque sceneries and driving on this road is certainly an experience to remember. However, certain groups of young bikers often hit this road for stunting and other thrills turning the pleasure of driving into a nightmare for others.
Residents living along the Shillong-Sohra road say that most of the bikers visit the place on Sunday and they drive their bikes like they are demon-possessed, even risking their lives and throwing the lives of others into jeopardy.
