TURA: Arrested former ANVC commander-in-chief Jerome Momin was granted seven-day police custody after he was produced before the court in Williamnagar on Thursday.
Police had on Wednesday evening arrested Jerome for allegedly selling sophisticated weapons and ammunition to self-styled commander-in-chief of banned GNLA, Sohan D Shira, in exchange of money worth Rs.17 lakh.
Police produced Jerome before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Williamnagar on Thursday where the Judge remanded him to police custody for seven days ignoring police plea to remand him in custody for fourteen days.
Earlier, police personnel from Williamnagar had raided the house of Jerome and arrested him in connection with selling of weapons to GNLA. The incident relates to the sale and transfer of three Self Loading Rifles (SLR) and a Carbine machine gun to the GNLA from a hidden armory of ANVC commander-in-chief Jerome Momin on December 15, 2014, at Sisobibra village, near Williamnagar town, even as the official disbanding ceremony of both the ANVC and ANVC-B was taking place in Tura Dikki-Bandi stadium in the presence of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and other top government functionaries.
East Garo Hills Police launched an operation at Sisobibra that same day and intercepted the money amounting to Rs.17 lakh after arrest of three collaborators but failed to recover the weapons which had already been moved to the GNLA camps.
