SHILLONG: Road accidents are on the rise in the State with as many as 302 incidents reported last year.
Police statistics further revealed that 171 people lost their lives while 476 were injured in the road accidents last year.
On an average, around 25 accidents are reported in the State every month.
According to police statistics, most of the accidents last year occurred between 12 noon to 9 pm.
The number of road accidents in the state has seen a drastic upward trend since 2013 when only 194 road accidents were reported.
East Khasi Hills District topped the number of road accidents accounting for 30 per cent of the total number of accidents reported in 2013.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that he felt that the Government should mull cancelling the licenses of repeated defaulters. Police is conducting frequent awareness programmes on road safety, he added.
