Tusker kills man, elephant electrocuted
Tezpur (Assam): In separate incidents, a tusker trampled one person to death while a wild elephant was electrocuted at Namonigaon in Sonitpur district, forest officials said on Saturday. An elephant, a member of a wild herd, touched a high tension wire while on way to a paddy field and died on the spot at Namonigaon under Rangapara police station last night, West Sonitpur Divisional Forest Officer Narayan Mahanta said. The full-grown male elephant was about 25-years-old. In another incident in the same area, a 65-year-old farmer was trampled to death by an elephant which had come down to destroy his paddy field. The deceased has been identified Dhaniram Das, Mahanta said. (PTI)
Explosives recovered in Sonitpur
Tezpur (Assam): Security forces on Saturday recovered huge quantity of explosives from Dhekiajuli police station area of Sonitpur district. Acting on specific information, a joint team of the police and CRPF launched an operation at Balijan Kachari basti locality and recovered the explosives, Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar said. The explosives include three gelatin sticks, two electronic detonators, six batteries, 26 metres wire, and five kg of ball bearings along with 20 letter pad of NDFB(S) near a bamboo grove. The explosives were found behind a house in Balijan Kachari basti and it is an area dominated by NDFB(S). A ‘platoon commander’ of NDFB(S) was killed in an encounter with the security forces on November 17 in the area. (PTI)
Tripura OC suspended for inadequacy in duty
Agartala: The state government on Saturday suspended officer in-charge of Melagarh police station of Sonamura in West Tripura for deficiency in discharge of his duty following direction of Tripura High Court. Superintendent of Police, Sepahijala district Pradip De issued the suspension order based on the recommendation of the state government as follow up of the HC direction. The high court had asked the government to suspend OC Paritosh Das last week. According to report, Das was accused of releasing two accused persons involved in a family dispute despite being asked by the complainant to register a case in August. One Anarkali Begam and Abul Basar had lodged the complaint against two of their family members over land dispute. Allegedly, police released the two accused from the police station based on a written statement, which was not accepted by the complainant. (UNI)
Illegal arms & ammunition factory unearthed, 4 arrested
Barpeta (Assam): Security forces have unearthed an illegal arms and ammunition factory in a riverine area of Barpeta district of Lower Assam, police said on Saturday. Led by district Superintendent of Police Siladitya Chetia, a joint police and CRPF operation raided the unit near Milijuli market under Baghbar police station last night, Additional SP Satya Ranjan Saikia told reporters here. Ten hand-made pistols, two guns, and tools for making arms and ammunition were seized from the factory and four persons were arrested. Of the four, two are from Bihar and the rest from Barpeta district. Stating that the riverine (‘char’) areas in the state have became a haven for criminals, Saikia said the arms factory was set up at Baghbar with the help of the persons hailing from Bihar. (PTI)
Manipur Assembly session to begin on Dec 18
Imphal: The 12th session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly will be held from December 18 to 21. Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro said the governor will be requested to issue the order summoning the session. He said the State Cabinet presided by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Friday decided to summon the session. He said the Cabinet had also decided to upgrade government aided high schools to full fledged Government Schools in the hill districts. The schools, however, should have classes IX and X. Other government schools will be merged with the upgraded schools. About 13 schools will be benefited by the decision. (UNI)
