Meerut: 170 students from Nagaland, pursuing B Tech and MBA courses at an engineering and technology college in Modinagar near here, had to discontinue their studies as they failed to receive the scholarships provided by their state government.
Dipankar Sharma, Director of Divya Jyoti Institute of Engineering and Technology, today confirmed that 170 Naga students left college on Sunday.
He, however, stressed that the institute didn’t ask anyone to leave and it was a decision taken by the students.
“In fact, I suggested them to pay their pending fees in monthly instalments of Rs 10,000 but the students expressed their inability in making these payments too,” Sharma said.
The director said that under the Post-Matric Scholarship scheme, the Centre provides financial aids to students from North Eastern states and the funds are released by the states concerned.
According to the students, even though the Centre has provided the funds, Nagaland government has not released the same this year, he said.
Out of the 170 students, 115 had taken admission last year while the rest joined this year, he said, adding, about 12 students are still in the institute. (PTI)
