SHILLONG: Despite police advisories, women in Shillong continue to fall prey to miscreants who dupe young girls over social networking sites and other mobile applications.
In September this year, a woman from Upland Road, Laitumkhrah, befriended one Oscar Carry through ‘whatsapp’ who informed that he had sent a parcel for her which contained valuable gift items.
Subsequently she was informed that the parcel had arrived at the airport and instructed her to deposit Rs. 90,000 for the same.
The complainant deposited the amount on November 17 and 19 through SBI Jowai and SBI Shillong respectively.
Again, on November 20, she was instructed to deposit another Rs. 1, 50,000 for the parcel but by then she had realized that she had been cheated.
She has filed an FIR in this regard with the police.
Previously too, many similar such cases were reported in Shillong.
