Journalists from Assam,Tripura to take part
New Delhi: The National Union of Journalists plans to organise a dharna at Parliament on Monday to protest the increasing incidents of manhandling of print and electronic media journalists across the country.
Journalists from states including Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Odisha among others will participate in the agitation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NUJ President Ras Bihari and Secretary Ratan Dixit said the agitation will start from Jantar Mantar , New Delhi sharp at 1100 hrs and proceed towards Parliament.
They want to reiterate in unison that the sentinel of democracy, the journalists, should be given the due security and protection. In the statement submitted to all governors, Chief ministers and higher officials it is clearly mentioned that journalists protection law, media council , media commission be constituted and violation of rights of scribes be stopped.
Ras Bihari complained that in the past few years there have been rise in the incidents of crimes against media persons and in the past 14 years at least one scribe has been killed in one or the other state in the country. After committing the crime, the accused have also succeeded in escaping the law.
The NUJ will present a copy of the statement to the Prime Minister on Monday. Delhi Patrakar Sangh president Anil Pandey and secretary Anand Rana exhorted the meia persons to participate in the dharna in large numbers and said in a democratic set up upholding the rights of journalists is extremely important.
