SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), women’s wing has threatened to stage a hunger strike on December 14 against the State government’s alleged apathy in connection with the construction of a 5.5 km road at Killing in Ri Bhoi District.
The HANM women’s circle has questioned the government’s motive as to the delay in constructing the road which has been pending since 1993.
The organization said the delay has caused undue hardships to the people of 13 Mile constituting 18 villages who are allegedly harassed by Assam Police.
The women’s wing had earlier postponed the indefinite hunger strike scheduled on September 21 this year in front of the office of PWD, (Roads), Nongpoh Division, after the intervention of the Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner.
The strike was planned in protest against the delay on part of the government in metalling and black topping the 5.5 kilometer Byrnihat- GS Road- Killing road for years.
Though the women’s group had then received a letter from the office of the Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner written by Y. Laloo, Executive Engineer, PWD, (Roads), Nongpoh Division stating that the Nongpoh Division was awaiting sanction from the government to start the work, no follow up action was carried out by the department.
