SHILLONG: In connection with the discovery of empty sugar pouches by the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Mawsynram Circle, the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, P.S. Dkhar has ordered an inquiry into the dumping of over 5,000 sugar packets.
The empty packets labeled as ISS Grade sugar were supplied to beneficiaries at subsidized rates through Fair Price Shops at Mawsynram.
Speaking to reporters, Dkhar said that G.S. Nongkhlaw, Joint Director of Supply will inquire into the matter.
“We need to ascertain the stock position of wholesalers to find out the source of the misutilisation, if any,” he said.
He added that ten days time was granted to complete the probe.
It may be mentioned that BPL families get 3 packets of sugar every month priced at Rs 13.50 per packet issued by the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.
Earlier in the day, the FKJGP met the Deputy Commissioner to apprise him of the matter, where the DC informed that an investigation team has been set up to nab the culprits and punish them as per the provisions of law.
The organization has sent a complaint to the DC and the Principal Secretary (Food and Civil Supply) to take up the matter at the earliest.
The organization has also urged the people residing at Mawphlang, Tyrsad, Sawsymper, Mawsynram and Balat-Bangladesh border to check any anomalies in the sugar distribution through Fair Price Shop and notify the BDO or the District in-charge for any discrepancies.
