Five coal laden trucks seized, six held for NGT order violation

JOWAI: Three coal laden trucks were seized for illegally transporting coal from Jaintia Hills on Thursday at around 6:30 PM.
According to the West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, personnel from Phramer Traffic Cell while conducting vehicle checking on Phramer-Shangpung road detected three coal laden trucks – ML04A-8149, ML04B-3785 and ML04-9849.
On seeing the police party, drivers of the three trucks tried to flee; however, police chased them and detained all trucks but the drivers managed to escape.
They were arrested later and forwarded to the court.
In a similar incident, East Jaintia Hills Police detected two coal laden trucks at a checking point near Khliehriat police station.
The trucks – ML04-A-5292 driven by Dei Sumer and AS01-AC-6767 driven by Hamboi Dkhar – were seized and the drivers arrested.
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills Police arrested one Kumar Rai while he was extracting coal from a coal quarry owned by one Khmied Lyngdoh at Moolamanoh village in the district, in violation of the NGT order, on December 8 at around noon.
Man held over rape charge; minor raped
SHILLONG: Jowai Police has arrested one person identified as Nicholas Rymbai for allegedly raping and threatening one woman.
Police said the victim lodged a complaint that the accused had raped her on September 27 and had also threatened her with dire consequences in his house at Ladthalaboh, Jowai.
In another incident, one Stephen Shabong (30) allegedly raped a twelve year old girl at Lad Sumer village in Ri Bhoi on Wednesday. Police said they got the information from Shillong Police after the girl was admitted at Ganesh Das Hospital, Shillong.
GVK EMRI conducts training on cardiac life support
SHILLONG: GVK EMRI Emergency Medicine Learning Centre, Meghalaya, conducted the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support and Advance Cardiac Life Support for 23 government doctors of Meghalaya from December 7-9 at GVK EMRI – Meghalaya operation office at Lawmali, Shillong.
The doctors were taught CPR, Rhythm identification, Defibrillation, Intubation and how to run a team Megacode.
It may be recalled that GVK EMRI Emergency Medicine Learning Centre was recently awarded the Gold Certificate by AHA at the EMCON 2015 at Hyderabad on November 21 last.
Meet on CM’s Youth for Green Campaign in NG Hills
SHILLONG: The North Garo Hills district administration convened a meeting on Thursday to discuss various activities to be taken up in the district relating to the Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign.
The meeting which was presided over by Deputy Commissioner S.C. Sadhu was attended by the district heads of various government departments and representatives of various NGOs.
The meeting chalked out a cleaning drive programme in market places including localities and other public places to maintain green and clean villages falling under the district.
The meeting also called upon government officials to work together with various Bazaar committees to organize awareness programmes on importance of cleanliness.
Demand for attaching fire brigade with all police outposts
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Peoples’ United Front, Nartiang Circle has urged the State government to station a fire brigade at every Police outpost in the State to overcome any untoward happening.
The call was made following a recent incident where fire engulfed a house leading to loss of over Rs.3 lakh at Nartiang.
In this connection, the Front has pointed out that the absence of a fire brigade in the region has affected the people as the nearest fire brigade was located 24 km away in Jowai.
New traffic arrangement in Jowai for Guv visit, concert

JOWAI: In view of the proposed visit of Governor V. Shanmuganathan to Jowai on December 12 to attend the closing ceremony of the Platinum Jubilee of the Dorbar Shnong Lumiongkjam and also for the live concert to be performed by Firehouse at Panaliar Playground, Jowai, on the same day the Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills District, has notified that all trucks coming from East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi towards West Jaintia Hills are to be staggered at Wahmynsoo on NH-44 from 3 PM till 10 PM while trucks coming from East Jaintia Hills to West Jaintia Hills are to be staggered at Phramer on NH-44 for the same duration.
Parking of vehicles in connection with the Firehouse concert will be allowed at Dulong Playground, Tpep Pale Playground, Aitnar areas, Chilliang Raij areas, Iawmusiang area and Thomas Jones area.
CPC holds prayer meet for Chennai flood victims
SHILLONG: The Central Puja Committee convened a prayer meet at Jagannath Mandir, Shillong, recently to condole the loss of precious lives those who lost their lives in the worst ever floods in Chennai.
The meet attended by Guru Singh Sabha, Lion’s Club and Buddhist Union, among others, resolved to make a fervent appeal to the people of Shillong to contribute generously both in cash and kind for immediate relief of the victims including the sick and injured and send their valuable donations to the Secretary, Bharat Sevashram Sangh, Keshavapuram, T.H. The meeting also resolved to send a petition to the Chief Minister of Meghalaya urging him to depute a State government official to be stationed at Chennai temporarily to assist the large number of students and patients from the State presently stationed or stranded at Chennai.
Christmas Carol Service in city on Dec 12
SHILLONG: The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of India (PCI) will organize a one day Christmas Carol Service on December 12 at 2nd Polo Sports Complex, Shillong, from 1 PM.
Addressing a press conference to this effect, Rev. G.S. Lyttan, Administrative Secretary of PCI, said, “The participants are requested to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled time; there will be surprises for children as well.”
He informed that Governor V. Shanmuganthan, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and his Cabinet members, Deputy CEM P.T. Sawkmie, Seng Khasi, Sein Raij and the Central Puja Committee are among the invitees.
The purpose of the event is to bring together people from all walks of life and join hands to address peace and harmony in the region with the theme, ‘peace and harmony’ in a way that will add meaning to the essence of Christmas, he added.
